How to choose an accumulation tank?
When choosing an accumulation tank, it’s not enough to just look at the number of liters. The right tank helps your heating system operate more efficiently, extends the boiler’s lifespan, and makes the entire system more convenient. The wrong size, on the other hand, can lead to poor efficiency and unnecessary costs. Go through the following points and choose a tank that’s right for your home and heating system.
Heated surface area
When it comes to wood-fired boilers, use this simple rule of thumb: allow for at least about 10 liters of buffer capacity for every square meter of heated space. For example, for a 150 m² house, choose an accumulation tank with a capacity of at least 1,500 liters.
Heating System Capacity
Make sure the tank size is appropriate for the heating system’s capacity. If you choose a tank that is too large, the boiler or heat pump may not be able to heat it up within a reasonable amount of time.
Type of heating system
For a solid-fuel boiler, choose a larger storage tank than for a heat pump. With wood-fired heating, a larger tank helps store all the heat produced during a single heating cycle.
Production of Hot Domestic Water
If you plan to use the accumulation tank to produce hot water as well, choose a tank with a suitable hot-water coil. Coils come in different capacities—make your selection based on your household’s consumption and the number of users.
The tank fits through the door
Before making a purchase, measure the widths of doorways, hallways, stairways, and turning radii. If space is limited, choose a narrower tank or a modular tank.
Room height and width
Keep in mind that the accumulation tank may be tall and will require space for connecting the piping and for future maintenance. Leave enough free space around the tank.
Future Needs
If you’re considering adding solar heating, a second boiler, or another heating solution in the future, choose a tank now that has the necessary connections. That way, you’ll avoid having to retrofit it later.
Installation and Maintenance
Take into account the weight of the tank and the floor’s load-bearing capacity. Large tanks can weigh hundreds or even thousands of kilograms when full—make sure the floor can support that load.
